ING Entertainment was brought into Hunan Satellite TV’s 2019 Spring Festival gala to contribute staging arrangement and casting. Not as producer of the broadcast — as a supplier trusted to deliver material into one.

THE BRIEF

Hunan Satellite TV is one of China’s most-watched networks, and 《四海同春》 is its Chinese New Year gala built for Chinese communities outside the mainland — the on-screen title translates as A Worldwide Celebration of Chinese New Year. The audience is diaspora as much as domestic.

ING Entertainment’s remit was arrangement and casting: shaping staging for segments, and supplying performers into a production run by the network’s own team.

That distinction matters, and we would rather state it plainly than blur it. ING did not produce this broadcast. ING was brought in to deliver into it — which, on a show at this level, is its own kind of credential. Networks do not hand segments of a flagship gala to companies they have not already vetted.

THE PROGRAMME

The gala was staged on a full broadcast set — a circular LED centrepiece, tiered choir positions, and a hard camera plot — and ran the range of formats a Spring Festival gala demands:

  • Large ensemble numbers in Chinese New Year red, cast in the dozens, built for wide shots
  • Vocal features with backing dancers in high-contrast costume
  • 《小小传承人》— a children’s segment, young performers in drum formations against a temple-motif set
  • Youth ensemble sequences on a bright, contemporary set dressing
  • A full-company finale bringing hosts, singers and cast together on a single stage picture

WHAT A BROADCAST GALA DEMANDS

Delivering into a televised gala is a different discipline from producing your own event, and most of the difficulty is invisible from the sofa.

You inherit someone else’s run-of-show. Cue numbering, comms protocol, rehearsal blocks, shot list — all set by the network. A contributing company adopts them exactly, or it becomes the reason a segment overruns.

Stage time is rationed. A gala this size shares its stage across many acts. You get your blocks, on the schedule you’re given, and you rehearse to be ready inside them.

The camera is the audience. Formations have to build clean macro pictures for wide shots and hold together in close-up. A director cutting live needs moments of stillness to cut on — movement that never settles gives them nothing.

Children change the constraints. A youth segment brings scheduling limits, supervision requirements and a shorter rehearsal tolerance. It gets planned around, not squeezed in.

Compliance runs to broadcast standard. Music licensing, content review, wardrobe — all cleared before air, with alternates ready. A gala carrying sponsor integration and an international footprint has no appetite for a late substitution.

The register is diaspora, not domestic. A programme made for Chinese communities abroad has to read as home to viewers who left it — familiar, warm, and unmistakably the holiday, without assuming the audience caught this year’s mainland references.

THE TRACK RECORD BEHIND IT

The 2019 invitation did not arrive from nowhere. ING had by then choreographed and recorded dance segments for Henan Provincial Television’s Spring Festival Gala for five consecutive years, 2012 through 2016, alongside the Zhengzhou Television Spring Gala and regular work across Henan TV programming — 《寻找新主播》,《名嘴K歌秀》,《都市KTV》,《武林风》.

Five straight years inside a provincial gala is how a company learns to work to broadcast discipline. The national-tier booking followed it.
